Holiday Movie & Dogtown Pizza Pairings for Cozy Nights In
When you think of holiday movies, what’s the first one that comes to mind? Is it an old-time classic like A Christmas Story, cartoon like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, comedy like Elf, or newer coming-of-age film like Home Alone 2? While all these movies are centered around Christmas, they also have one more thing in common: holiday food.
While Buddy the Elf’s candy-syrup spaghetti might not taste as good to those who aren’t elves, everyone has their own topping preferences. At Dogtown Pizza, we believe in serving a variety of pizza toppings for all palettes– no matter how unconventional they may seem. In this post, we’ll give you our top holiday movie night and Dogtown pizza pairings for cozy nights spent inside this winter in STL.
1. Home Alone 2 & Cheese Pizza
Not only did Kevin McCallister get left home alone once, but twice! In this 2nd adaptation of the Home Alone franchise, Kevin mistakenly gets on the wrong plane and embarks on a colder vacation in New York by himself. And, lucky for him, he has his dad’s credit card.
So, eat like Kevin in New York! In one scene, Kevin is greeted by a bellman handing him a large box of delicious, steamy cheese pizza. Even find your favorite soft drink to pair with it. Kevin sips on a Coke poured into a champagne glass while watching The Grinch during his ride. Wouldn’t it be nice to be catered to like Kevin McAlister with his dad’s credit card for just a day?
2. How The Grinch Stole Christmas & Pepperoni Pepperoncini Pizza
Green. Unconventional. Tangy. While these might be ways to describe the Grinch, they also describe our Pepperoni Pepperoncini pizza. It’s our classic pepperoni pizza with a twist– it’s topped with sweet, tangy, and green pepperoncini peppers. The Grinch and this Dogtown pizza topping blend have one more in common than you might think.
Spicy and sweet. Spicy like our pepperoni, the Grinch is very angry and resentful of the Whos in Whoville. He doesn’t fit in so he takes out his anger by stealing Christmas. His heart then grows and he becomes sweet after seeing their positivity and resilience after losing all their gifts. The perfect blend of emotions is portrayed to highlight the discovery of the true meaning of Christmas in this coming-of-age classic.
3. Elf & Deluxe Pizza
Do you have a sweet tooth? Nothing tops Buddy the Elf eating a bowl of spaghetti for breakfast topped with maple syrup, chocolate syrup, M&Ms, marshmallows, and a chocolate fudge Pop Tart. As he says, “We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corn, and syrup.” No matter how this concoction makes you feel, it’s whimsical, full of flavor, and over the top.
Like Buddy the Elf, treat yourself with our Deluxe pizza. It’s topped with plump mushrooms, sweet yellow onions, Italian salsiccia, and crispy cooked bacon. It’s much more hearty than what an elf would eat; we guarantee it tastes better, too.
4. The Polar Express & Hot Wings with Pizza
Hot chocolate is a staple of winter and part of one of the most iconic scenes in The Polar Express. During the train ride to the North Pole, there’s a musical number where everyone on the train is served a steaming cup of hot chocolate by dancing waiters. What better way for a kid to get ready to go visit Santa! It’s also a great way to warm up in the bitter cold.
Like the kids in this movie, we’d recommend warming up but in a different way– with our hot wings and pizza! Get your taste buds fired up with our selection of spicy wings. Or, choose to cool it down with your choice of sauce. Either way, cruise along to the North Pole on the comfort of your couch and sing along with friends or family.
5. Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer & Tomato Basil Garlic Pizza
Rudolph uses his widely recognizable glowing red nose to guide Santa’s sleigh through the night. Like the Grinch, Rudolph is also different from everyone else and is ostracized for it. But, he prevails and helps save Christmas. It’s a refreshing tale that all can gather for and an overall classic feel-good story.
Bright red cherry tomatoes bear an uncanny resemblance to Rudolph’s glowing nose– don’t you think? It’s the star ingredient of this pizza and the reason why we chose to pair it with this cartoon classic. Our fresh tomatoes alongside our fragrant basil and minced garlic are healthy options sure to make you feel good on a warm winter night spent inside.
6. A Christmas Story & 4 Meat Pizza
An old-time classic, comedy, and coming-of-age film wrapped up in one, A Christmas Story is one of the best holiday movies around, so we saved the best for last. Whether it was having to dress up in a ridiculous pink bunny costume or dying to get a Red Ryder BB gun, Ralphie Parker faced some big obstacles for a 9-year-old. One of those also happened to be the disaster on Christmas day when the neighbor’s hounds stole his family’s turkey.
And thus came the “Chinese turkey” (a fully feathered, “smiling” duck). The Parkers’ improvised dinner is a new take on a Christmas meat-focused meal, and that’s why we chose our 4 Meat pizza to go with this movie. Like Ralphie’s father, this pizza is made for meat lovers and all carnivores alike– it’s got salsiccia, pepperoni, hickory-smoked bacon, and ham. Try this loaded option if you can empathize with The Old Man, a “turkey junkie. A bona fide garley turkicanus freak [whose] eyes would begin to gleam with a wild and ravenous light” a few days before carving his delicious delicacy.
